School soundproofing

This dramatically reduced the noise leakage and the school was able to conduct separate activities simultaneously in the gymnasium.

3 Signs Your Home Isn’t Insulated Properly

Insulating your home is more important today than it has ever been. In the past the only consideration was for the comfort of the occupants but now a home must reach a certain standard for energy efficiency to be let to tenants or receive a fine. So it pays to be aware of these 3 signs of an uninsulated home.

Draughty rooms
Draughts can come from all sorts of places in the home but the most common sources of drafts are windows and around gaps in doors. Replacing windows and doors is the best way to resolve this issue.

Walls, ceilings and floors feel cold to the touch
If lofts are not insulated properly you may be able to tell by touching walls and ceilings and checking to see if they feel cold. If upstairs bedrooms feel cold it could be a sign that radiators are not working as well as they should or the insulation above needs replacing.

Hot in the summer cold in the winter

One of the biggest giveaways of a poorly insulated room is marked fluctuations in temperature. An extreme example is when you have an unheated uninsulated conservatory that is virtually unusable in the winter and on hot summer days. While rooms within the house are unlikely to be as bad as this, you will still notice that temperatures in the room are not as comfortable as other rooms.

How To Soundproof Doors

You may have a well-insulated home or office, but sometimes noise from outside is the problem and this can often be due to doors not having adequate sound insulation. Here’s how to fix the problem.

Soundproofing doors will have the additional benefit of improving insulation against draughts and it will also provide extra security besides providing sound insulation, so it is definitely worth investing in.

Soundproofing measures for doors should include draughtproofing to exterior doors as standard and if it’s a porch, install secondary double glazing. You can even install toughened glass which will contribute towards both sound insulation and security. When sound proofing doors, don’t forget to fill joints around the doors with acoustic sealant.

Sometimes noise can come from internal doors. In offices and apartment blocks noise will often be heard coming from corridors and so on so in these cases you will find similar benefits from draughtproofing.

Replacing old or lightweight hollow core doors with heavyweight solid core doors is also an option. These will help disrupt the transmission of noise between neighbouring flats for example.

Airport Noise Complaints Down Near Manchester

Noise complaints have gone down significantly near Manchester airport, even if some residents have gone to extremes in their battle for some peace and quiet. The drop in complaints could be down to a range of measures taken to reduce noise in home around the airport including insulation grants.

The number of noise complaints from people living near Manchester airport fell from 1,509 in 2013/14 to 860 complaints in 2014/15. Apart from making planes quieter as they reach the runway (no easy task) the only other way to stop noise disturbing people living near an airport is sound insulation.

£371,540 was sent out in grants to 108 householders in 2013/14 which may have gone some way to reducing the impact of noise and complaints. However this didn’t appear enough to stop one disgruntled Manchester resident who complained 729 times in a year according to the Manchester Evening News.

This meant that the individual took it upon himself to complain twice a day for 12 months. Is complaints would no doubt have been heard even if it isn’t clear whether he gained any special treatment as a result.

If you happen to live on a noisy flightpath, why not ask about the availability of grants to fund the cost of sound insulation? It may be the quickest way to living a quiet life.

St Edwards School, North London

St Edwards School in North London were having trouble with noise pollution from the school gymnasium. The room was split into two with foldable acoustic doors. This meant that when the room was being used for two different groups, neither side was able to conduct activities without being able to hear the other sides noise coming through the divide.

When we were asked to make an assessment we found that there was a weak spot in the breeze block above the acoustic door. The issue should really have been dealt with by the initial building company when installing the doors.

Metropolitan Insulation installed a MF acoustic 12cm wall with independent aluminium framework. This also comprised of 1 layer of fermacel, a sound shield layer and all edges were properly sealed.

This dramatically reduced the noise leakage and the school was able to conduct separate activities simultaneously in the gymnasium.
